406 build in CA, What cam to go with
Hello everyone,
I was wondering if you guys could help me out in selecting a good cam for my build...
Specs:
SBC 406
Super Ram
AFR 195 heads
Ligenfelter 58mm TB
Car:
1986 Z28
Tremec T-56
3.73 10 bolt
This has to pass CA smog.

You've already got a lot of money into it as can be seen by the parts list, so I'd recommend complementing it with a roller cam conversion. Somewhere between the 214/224 Crane emissions legal cam and something with 224/234 to pass emissions. They say the cubes will make the bigger cams tamer, otherwise I'd say stick below 218 intake duration. Something on a wide-ish LSA 112+ will be easier to get to pass. Lift won't affect emissions much, so shoot for .500" easily.
One factor that is a little (very) important is compression ratio. What's it at in your combo? It may skew the desicion one way or the other. Overcamming a low CR, big port engine is sure to drive poorly. Undercamming a high CR engine can lead to knock at low RPMs (and waste your money spent on the high perf package you got). Hopefully you are close to 10:1 in that combo (maybe even a .5 point more) to make a good street package.
