Whats wrong with my car?!
ok heres the deal. 91 L98 trans am with mods in the sig. except for its open y-pipe right now (more on that later).
heres the problem: it cuts out above 3k rpms. some times it cuts out higher and sometimes not at all but never really below 3k. (it may stumble every now and then off idle tho) most of the time the throttle has to be over half way but today i was just at partial throttle and it started at just about 3k on the dot. last weekend i drove for a few hours in it and when i first went out i went wot in 2nd and 3rd to about 5k rpms. it ran as smooth as it ever has then. but for some reason instead of doin the 120 i should be at those rpms in that gear it was at about 90 mph.
earlier that day i was at a light and put it in nuetral and the idle fluctuated from like 2k to 600 and back up untill i put it back into gear and then it idled fine at 600 or so. i tried again and it did the same thing. hasnt done that since.
last year i installed an AFPR from holley. set it to 45 like i read. drove it for a while and even set a new personal best. the next week it started cutting out at 5k rpms or so in third ONLY. never any other gear. after that it would start cutting out at the traps at the track. i backed off the fuel pressure to about 40 and it ran fine on the street. but i never could get it fixed at the track.
what the hell is goin on with my car? i though maybe my carsound cat was clogged so i cut it off. still does the same thing. im willing to bet the fuel filter is very old (its rusted to the line pretty badly) and i havent checked the fuel pump yet. but if it was the pump shouldnt have the problem all the time and not hit or miss?
PLEASE HELP ME.
o ya i also have an MSD stock replacement coil i got june of last year (before the AFPR)

I had a problem last almost identical to what your describing. One of the 2 connecters that plugs into the dist--the locking clamp broke off and the plug was only partially in the socket.
I hope yours is this simple (but it was hard to find!!!)!
