TPI 305 rpm questions
Will I be able to get the TPi on my 305 rev and pull well to 5500 RPM. Its my understanding that the TPi was designed for the 305 therefore it doesn't restrict the 305 like it does the 350. I have already ported the plemun but I was going to go in and smooth everything out, just take off the slag and casting marks but not really open anything up. I'm also contemplating on weather or not to swap on a set of Vette heads or have my stockers ported. Also would an LT1 cam be a good upgrade for my car? Right now its a stock '87 LB9. Since I already have the "good" cam I was wondering if the LT1 would be worth swapping in. Just one more question. Since my car is MAF if I do a cam swap will I have to have an eprom burnt for my car?
Thanks

Fellow Iowan (well I'm formerly Iowan),
I don't have much advice on the intake porting other than there's quite a bit of room for improvement, even for a 305.
But, change the cam while the intake is off. Something like a 2032 crane emissions legal roller cam or a little smaller will wake up that 305.
Headwork? You'd want to mill the L98 aluminum heads to get the compression back (58cc vs 54cc and might as well up the CR a tad). You wouldn't want to spend too much time on the stock heads, other than it's good practice. Others have ported the stock heads with ok results, so search those out.
For a 305, I'd only do a cam (including pushrods and valve springs), some headers and catback, and a torque converter (if you had an automatic, which you don't - 2400 RPM or so). Also get the rear gears up a little (3.23, 3.27, 3.42, 3.45, 3.73 or 4.11). Save the rest of your money for a 383.
The stock programming should get it running decently, unless you change injectors, if you're sqweamish about the chip tuning thing. MAF is quite forgiving, and as long as the changes are as simple as I've provided, should be "good enough" for most people. If it gives you heck, well, that's what this website is for.

It's possible to get your 305 to rev to 5500rpm without the power dropping off. You'll need to do more than remove the casting marks though. You really want to either port your base or replace it with an aftermarket one. The runners are the most restrictive thing on there, so you'll need to swap them out while you're at it.
The 'Vette heads work well with the 305. I have them in my combo and I'm very happy with them.
How much are you looking to spend?

How much do I want to spend? Not Much
See I don't religously race this car and right now I am spending a bunch on body work and getting it to look good. I would just ike to get it to rev past 5000 without falling on its nose preferably around 5500. I already have a set of vette heads so all I need is the cam. The reason I want to go with a LT1 is cause they are really cheap and should get the job done for me. As far as porting the base and runners how far do you guys think I will have to go to get it to pull higher. Should I siameese the base, or just open it up a bit? How bout the runners aftermarket pieces are kind of out of the question cause damn they are alot of bones. What can I do to them to get them to flow better? Here are my mods so far and this has been a hell of a improvment over stock.
-Modified MAF
-TB coolant bypass
-Air foil
-Open filter element
-Port Plenum
-Adjustable fuel pressure regulator
-Headers
-Aftermarket Y and exhaust 3"
-Underdrive pully
Oh BTW my car does have the Borg Posi diff with 3.45's and the 5-speed

Well if you already have the heads get a decent cam and put it all together. As for the runners, to mod what you have you'll have to cut them up and try to turn them into a home made SLP style runner. There was at least one person on here that did that. As for the base, I just bought an aftermarket one for my setup.
