Need help from Pontiac owners years 88 and 89.
I've been trying to get my car back to normal with a serpentine setup off of an 88 TA. The only thing left...the air filter canister is not sealed to the rest of the intake. What's supposed to keep it sealed? Clamps? I got the stuff from Hawks and still can't figure out how to keep it sealed.
Looks good to me. I beleive there is a large hose clamp that goes around the duct work flange and holds it tight against the metal neck sticking out the top of the air filter housing. Not much more complicated that that.

Yep - that piece is secure. What I'm interested in is the "metal neck sticking out the top of the air filter housing." This piece on mine just sits loose. What secures it?

There is a long bolt that goes down thru the center of the brace across the top of the lid and bolts into the body thru a matching hole in the bottom of the canister. Then when you LIGHTLY tighten it up it presses the lid onto the rest of the canister.
I said "LIGHTLY TIGHTEN" because uf you crank down too hard it starts collapsing the air filter.
At least that's how it works on my '91 Bird.....

My stock setup used spring clamps (3 or 4) to hold the lid to the body of the cannister. It's been off the car for 12 years so I'm going from memory. I can pull it off the shelf for a closer look later tonight if that would be helpful.

That would be very helpful. I'm fairly certain it's not the long stud type (I've had a 91 GTA and know what you're talking about). Guess it's time to start hitting junkyards looking for clamps.
I couldn't get these at a home supply store could I? Perhaps an auto parts place?
Oh - and Mark: check the South Central regional board for information about Houston Thirdgen get-togethers. If you haven't been you're really missing out.

Ok, there's 3 clamps attached to the cannister that hold the lid on. If you don't have those clamps, I don't think you have the 88-89 style cannister. Drop me an email and I'll send you some digital photos of the original setup from a few angles.
Haven't checked out the South Central board so I'll have to take a look. Job and family just doesn't leave much time for the car though and the exterior looks like a POS so I'm not in a hurry to show it off.

Hey 3.1 show us a close up pic of the top and inside of the air filter housing so that we can better understand what it is you are working with the housing differ between the v/8's and v/6's on some years.
My car had a 1 inch bolt that tightened the bottom of the canister to the body then the top was clamped with 3 clamps.

Both of you guys are on the right track. I've got a one inch bolt that tightens the metal bracketry to the car and the rubber tubing itself attaches with a large hose clamp style connector to the "large upper metal neck" piece. I don't have a digital camera to use currently and so can't attach pics. I'll do some work in paint and attach that here in a bit.

There should be three clips around the perimeter to hold the top to the base. That's the way mine was before I removed it.

As long as your filter is secured to the tubing I wouldnt worry about it. Most so called cold air kits have a open K&N air filter secured to some fancy smancy chrome tube for about a hundred bucks..
