Accel base--before/after pics of porting
I recently purchased a accel superram base manifold and after looking at the runner ports, i decided there is a ton of room to go bigger
so i took a dremel tool and 60 grit sanding drums and went at it.
its not quite completed yet but heres what i did so far...
Let me know what you think!

Keep in mind unless you take the same dimensions through the whole base, nothing is gained...i/e the golf ball should drop all the way through.

Dropping the golfball all the way through will not work because the shape of the head ports are rectangular on the other end. I agree with your general premise that the ports will only flow what the smallest cross sectional area will permit.

Did you do any porting on the Head Side of the intake? I started there with mine, Matched it to a Felpro 1205 gasket, now I am going to do like you did and open up the other end as far down as I can.
I am trying to open mine up as much as possible all the way through, I need the flow!

Looks good!!!
Are you using your stock runners or aftermarkets?
I'm waiting on a already ported Accel base to ship myself to match up to some AS&M runners. This thing has been ported all around by Total Engine Airflow and the seller claims 25-40 more HP than standard Accel base. But you know sellers claims. I guess I'll have to wait and see, I'm sure it'll flow just fine.
Here's a shot from the seller. I should have it next week sometime.

yeah there's not enough material to allow the ball to drop all the way thru, but i think what i am doing so far will help out
its larger opening on the runner bolt side, and goes to the smaller rectangle port on the head side.. thats a large nozzle like effect that should speed up airflow fromt the larger section thru the smaller section, which will increase overall flow.
i havent done the head ports at all and not sure if i will yet until sometime when i get new heads then i will match them up.
but for now, i have this manifold and its not goin on till sometime later down the road. i just figured i would mess with it. I will be using a superram upper and hopefully can port out the runners to match too and gain some more flow.
i just gotta get a longer bit to get down farther

Obvioulsy you don't want the intake port at the head shaped like a golf ball,..

Intent of my post was to mention that the runner length to the intake port would need to be opened up...golf ball (if used as a template) should drop through to the intake port...feather back from there....i/e just going in a inch or two isn't really worth it.I see the original poster knows this....my suggestion is to look at www.use-enco.com for extended bits.....and also pick up a flexible bottlebrush hone...try a dairy distributor (folks that make stuff to clean milk tanks, etc) they'll have'em anywhere from 1/2inch diam to 6 inches-plus to cleanse and polish the SS milk lines.

^ thanks for the info. the ball was used as a template to open up the runner ports so i can get them all even and i know i have to open the rest up somewhat all the way thru. problem is i dont know how to judge how even all the passages are. so i guess i will continue to do what i have been doing and get in there and just open stuff up
i have ALOT of time to really work this over so no worries. i'm just taking my time and will post updated pics as time goes on

Lots of measuring. You can cut out templates from one port and match the rest, but be careful of differences in the casting, like the EGR area is something you want to be real careful around.
The smallest area is usually right in the middle of the base on a TPI. It is on the Edelcrock and GM bases, I'd imagine the Accel is the same way. You really need to attack that area IMO to make the most improvement to the base.

Dang, you did that with a Dremmel??? How many hours do you have invested so far??? Daaaaaaaang...
Get a die grinder man... waaaaaaaaay quicker than Dremmel on things like this. Electric die grinders can be had for about 20 bucks and kick **** over smaller hoby grinders...

suprisingly with the dremel and the 60 grit sanding drums, it only took a like an hour or so two holes, i think.... i wasnt really timing it. which i dont think is too bad. i have nothing else to do it works out find.
i bought some grinding stones for the dremel too but those didnt work at all! i was suprised to see the drums do alot better

I wish I had your kind of time on my hands, LOL! Some clean work, but holy crap...Here you go, for only 16 bucks, it's worth every penny for you to finish that amount of work in less than 10-20 minutes. Electric die grinder on ebay. The right tool makes ALL the difference.

Get a set of gaskets Mr. Gasket P/N 142 the are for oversized runners Then make a steel template like this and you got a pretty good guide

^ yeah i used that golf ball as a guide for the base but the farther you get in, you cant use the golf ball any more. it tapers to a square. thats what worries me if i try to go in that far. i think i will try to get the ball as far as i can and leave it at that, and do some work to the walls around the head port and stop there. should be plenty for a superram setup.
