Would my MAF top out?

Hi everyone,

Im kicking things around and thinking about swapping in a 400sbc shortblock into my 88GTA. Was wondering if my MAF would top out, and if so would I have to convert to MAP?

You will most likely overwhelm the MAF,,, I am pegging mine at 255 gms/sec which is the max reading in the MAF tables. I have a 395 stroker.

However, by programming the Eprom chip, I am getting more than enough fuel at WOT even when the MAF is maxed. Even if you switch to MAP, you will still need to program the Eprom chip.

BTW: you might have to replace the fuel pump with a higher flowing one. I am running the TTA fuel pump.

Another BTW: 255 gms/sec is equivalent to 452 CFM,,, but the stock MAF will flow 518 CFM with the screens, and flow 658 CFM with the screens removed. So even with the screens, the MAF can flow more than it can measure. Aint that something!!!

Myron Cottrel at TPIS seems to have good luck with the stock sized mas air meters with the fins shaved down from 14s down to the 11s,i personally would swap the system to speed density or similar

As you can see in my sig, I am using a MAF on my 395 cu.in. stroker and I have gone 12.3X sec in the quarter mile a couple months ago. The car will run in the 11s next year.

A descreened MAF will flow 658CFM which should be good to make about 506 Hp at the flywheel.

The screens in the MAF are used to straighten the air flow. removing the screens could cause an inconsistant swirling flow of air into the plenhum (sp)

The screens actually act the same as an airrator (sp) on a faucet.
The screens cause turbulant flow (on the back side of each wire is an eddy current), removing the screens results in more laminar flow. The MAF table is calibrated for the screens being in. It does make a noticable difference.

I'm with doc; the MAF system can easily be tuned to properly handle a MAF that gets maxed. You just add extra fuel with the P/E Tables once the MAF get's maxed.

FYI, I have a buddy with a solid roller 383 Miniram and custom ported AFR heads. His engine makes max power at 7,000 rpm and he maxes his MAF at 4,000 rpm. We've had no problem tuning his engine to over come the MAF problem by tuning the P/E Tables.

He also runs a "hogged out" MAF. We did have to rescale the MAF Scalar tables because of that. But a Romulator made short work of that too.
