removing smog equip (computer swap?)

Hello, i'm new, this is my first post. My dad has an engine from a totaled 89 transam, its a TPI 350. He wants to put the engine in a vehicle that doesnt require smog. He heard from a friend that all he had to do was swap in a computer that was setup for no smog equiptment. is that true? And ifso where can we find one?

Also whats a good inline fuel pump for this engine? Thanks. everyone!

Oh and I searched, but couldnt find anything in the articles to help me

http://www.chevythunder.com/

as for the ecm you will have to reseach a custom chip to disable the smog stuff, check ebay there are some guys that will custom burn them. i have also herd of a wiring harness / ecm that eliminates alot of the sensor hook ups but i don't know alot about it. good luck

I have a 87 Trans am. I put ceramic coated headers and a Y pipe on my 5.0L TPI. I took off that smog pump and the charcoal canister too.....I have not had any problems at all. I did upgrade to a Hypertech chip. But my motor runs really good.

PM me. I can get you started with chip. Until you get a prom burnt you can close of the hole that went to the EGR solenoid where the EGR vaccum line went to keep from getting an SES light.

What are you using for a harness? Try these guys (nayyy)
WWW.howell-efi.com. They can set you up with a complete harness already set for no emissions. Lots of options to chose from. The owner was a GM engineer and he started Howell when he retired. I have used their product on an Impala I converted. Excellent quality and they know their stuff and 1st rate customer service.
