I have a stock 5.7 TPI...I have a nitrous set up coming in already...other then that I have 400-500 bucks to drop. Please point me in the right direction...the more specific you could be would be very helpful and greatly appreciated. I plan on keeping the TPI setup as, once I get the cash up, Im gonna turbo it, but Id like to start building the motor up now to take the nitrous as well as handle the boost.
Thanks a million guys!

Yep, did the blower/nitrous thing when I was 18....lost my license time and
time again, until I was 25. (and that's just the stuff I got caught for.....
.
I say go for it, but try not to make statistics....

Actually, I was reffering to the age of the engine, not the age of the driver. Personally, I would look at a total rebuild, long before I started looking at any sort of power adder. However that's just me being **** about keeping everything running right.Originally posted by brutalform

Thanks for clearing that up...I was sitting here....checking my birthday going...damn...they lied to me...LOL...other wise, I know the motor needs to be built...and I plan on most of it beinf aftermarket. The turbo is a long way away...so no worries for now.Originally posted by Asdfga3

I think Asdfga3 was actually referring to the fact that the L98 from the 1989 Iroc is 17 years old--and he was implying the fact that throwing nitrous and boost on a stock bottom end is a very nice recipe for a grenade. I don't recall J_m0n3y187 saying that he was 17 anywhere in his post. Besides, not all teenaged males are terribly irresponsible...the way I see it, regardless of age, if you can afford the go-fast parts, then you deserve to enjoy them.
Anyhow, back to the issue at hand...you really want to be careful throwing too much boost or nitrous on the stock cast bottom end of the L98. If you slip up with the tuning and cause any detonation, those cast pistons will shatter pretty easily. A few guys get away with copius amounts of nitrous and boost on stock bottom ends for awhile through very careful tuning and running gasoline with a high enough octane rating. Were it up to me, inexperienced as I am, I would err on the safe side and at least invest in a set of forged pistons (and perhaps lower compression dished pistons depending on how much boost you want to run...though with high boost you then get into considering forged crank and rods as well and there go your savings...). To determine exactly what you should do with the motor, you need to first set some realistic goals about how much power you want to make and what you'll use the car for.
EDIT: It seems that I was too slow in typing my response! :P

It's cool. It's just that as a 19 year old guy, I've seen far to many smartasses who thought it would be a good idea to drop a bottle, blower, or both into an old stock engine and ended up, like Resto said, turn their engine into a grenade. Originally posted by J_m0n3y187

Assuming you run a full rebuild, and everything can handle the heat, I'd say go for it.
I actually deceided to drop the bank into a Holley Stealth ram set up and B&M Mega shifter...so yea...I still have the nitrous set up coming in shortly. But as you guys said, it wont be installed until Im 100% the motor can take it! Thanks a ton guys!

LOL, I guess the jokes on me. At least we can all have a good sense of humor.Member
Ummm.....exhaust? What are your plans for that since you didn't mention it? You need to think about that seriously as the stock exhaust systems on these cars are terrible at best. Headers at the very least need to be one of the first things on your list. Subframe connectors will also be worth considering. My $.02
Ill be getting a set of headers soon...coming local though...

it would be pretty nice to have a motor that can handle the power. but as we all know, stock trannies are nothing to boast about. youre going to want an exhaust, motor rebuild, and probably a new tranny or a damn good rebuild. i somehow doubt 500 will cover all of this.

I would for sure upgrade my ignition to a MSD set up, also as long as you dont get crazy with the nitrous you will be o.k., I hope you purchased a wet kit and not a dry kit. I have been running a 100hp shot on my old 200k engine for the last 40k and have had no problem at all, and I have put a lot of bottles in that thing, but FOLLOW the instructions like putting cooler plugs and retard the timming and you will be o.k. but also use at least 92/93 oct also. It nice to be able to knock off about a second in the quarter and then go back to regular stock after..... I was also going to mention the exaust but looks like you have already figured that out...GOOD LUCK.
