MAF Issue - Flashing SES Light

Ok first off i did search... I have a slight problem with my 89 formula 350.... every once in a while while i'm driving the car it will start to stumble and the ses light will flash... almost like a knock problem but no quite... then it just goes away and runs fine... I retrieved the codes from the computer it gave me code 34 - MAF. I dont know what to do... should i purchase a new maf and see if that helps or what? MAFs are expensive so i was wondering if anyone might know what would cause that kind of problem. Thanks!

NO, dont buy anything until you know what it is. Take a look under hood, and check the harness connector plug, to the MAF. Also check the MAF ducting. Make sure its not loose or damaged. If this all checks out, get yourself a service manual, such as a Helms, or a Howell. There are diagnostic charts to follow, and you can narrow it down to either a MAF, or a faulty ECM.

It does sound like knock

I had that problem with my 91Z. It would stumble and the more gas you gave it, it would just stumble harder. Feather the gas for a bit and it cleans itself up and the SES goes away and the car is fine again. Took weeks of testing...

Replaced the knock sensor and it went away.

Edit - I really did not think it was the knock either. I looked at a lot of things including all my ground straps and all kinds of other wiring issues. Turned out to be the knock even though are codes were being thrown.

Wow how you described your problem matches my problem to a t.... hmmm well I'll have to get a knock sensor when it gets warmer out... Thanks for the info on the problem... I was pretty much deadset that it was going to be the MAF.... I did go thru and check all the connections too, all checked out besides some other stupid things the previous owners did.
