MAF Vs. SD
MAF Vs. SD
Hello Guys. I'm new to this forum. My first car was a 88 Irocz. Unfortunately, it has become my project car as I am going to save it for when I am an older man(haha). I'm looking into purchasing a new iroc. It's a 90 Iroc. Now, I don't want to start any arguments about MAF and SD, I just want to know each of their advantages and limitations and which would be better suited to my modifications.
So, if I buy the 90 Iroc, I do plan to do some mild work. Bolt ons, intake, maybe a cam, heads. Now, how will the SD respond to this?
The question is should I buy this car or should I wait out and find a 88 or 89 and go with the MAF?
Remember, no arguments!
Thanks for your help guys. Great site
Frank

A MAF system will tolerate more bolt-ons as far as the ECM goes, just not too wild either. The speed density system is more desirable for the lack of the $$ of MAF sensor, I am not that knowledgable as far as speed density systems, from what I have read is that nearly any change would require adjustment in the PROM. Read the stickies and learn a lot.
Either way you go, you should have(or DIY) tune the car after any mods. When you change engine perimeters you should always re-tune the computer to enable it to perfomr properly with the modification.
- That said, MAF will tolerate much more than SD without having to be re-tuned. In the long run SD is better because there are no limitations. No matter which way you go, if you intend on many/decent mods, you need to either look into PROM tuning equipment or an aftermarket ecm.

If you do a search you find TONS & TONS of info on this. But As long as you don't change the heads or cam you can run a SD without burning a chip.

After reading all the threads on this site, you can get a company (TPIS, Comp Cams, ect.) to burn you a custom chip, but may hassle you if it is not running up-to-spec or where you think it should be. Best way I have been reading the forums is on making a custom chip, cheaper and you can change the results, unless you have tons of $$, and if you do send some my way.
wOOt.
