Changing TPI to a carburetor for a street driven vehicle is generally regarded as a downgrade. The TPI will provide far more low end torque, fuel mileage, and general reliability than a typical carburetor installation.

Yes, there is a processor (Engine Control Module) which controls the injection, ignition timing, and various other functions. GM first had engine control modules on mid- late-1970s Olds and Cadillacs, and they migrated to almost all models by 1980.

BTW - Welcome Aboard!

I totally agree...Keep the TPI set up. The Tuned Port motor is nice!

TPI is great! Any kind of Fuel injection is going to have some sort of computer to control the injector pulses and to analyze all of the sensors to decide on how much fuel is needed.

tpi is nice but it has restrictions that a carb set up does not. you need to figure out what you are going to do with the veh and then you could make a decision. Street car w/ limited rpm (6000@most) =TPI any higher rpm is limited by runner size. anything above 6k I would use a single plane and a matched carb set up... just my 2 cents...

Any type of ELECTRONIC Fuel injection has a computer. Mechanical fuel injection does not.

- Unless you're planning on going really wild, keep the TPI. Even at very strong street car, keep the injection stuff and switch the intake. - Or go DFI...

Nothing wrong with being new, everyone starts somewhere. For starters your 85 car has a computer to control the EFI. GM had ECMs in Cadillacs back in 1978ish I believe with TBI injection. The foreign cars had them much earlier than that even. Converting to carb is not a tough job, but it is not practical. There are plenty of things you can do to your TPI without putting a carb on it. Just my Hope this helps
