camshaft specs

Ok, I realize that this is a basic question, but I cant find any solid information that completely answers it. I understand a little about cams, like lobe seperation angles, lift, and duration, but what values of these specs are desirable in a given application?? This is what gets me. I have a stock 90 Trans Am with an LB9 and want to build it into a much more fierce daily driver, at least breaking 13.99. I also plan to do basics of, headers, catback, DIY PROM tuning, and all bolt-ons. Ive seen many different cams and understand that a LSA of less than about 112 will be pointless, but what about duration and lift in terms of my specific setup? Thank you

Also if anybody has a link to a thourough article about not only camshafts, but the entire valvetrain that would be great
