86 TPI FUEL DELIVERY PROBLEMS.

I have an 86 IROC TPI 305 auto, just out of no where the pump stopped delivering fuel. I changed the relay and this has not helped so I dropped the tank ( great fun) and installed a new pump, screen and filter.I still am having the same problem,no fuel. I jumped the harness to make sure there was not a problem with that and the pump started flowing. I reconnected it to the harness and nothing. I put a tester onto the chassis plug for the pump harness and I am only getting power from the wire in the center of the plug, turns on and off with the ignition. The second wire which has to be more of a direct power is not getting anything. Though maybe some of you more experience boys would know what is up? I looked all over for an inertia switc but no luck,is there even one and if so where is it?I have power at the injectors also.

Turns out that GM hid the fuel pump fuse around the location of the battery,Smart one GM!!! So I am glad I was able to answer my own question, thanks.

Dude, you should always check fuses. Guess you'll learn next time around. pulling a tank is not a cake job.

Fuel Delivery

Nice response,it was very helpfull. I did chack all fuses and even swapped out the relay,NO ONE would know there would even be a fuse hidden near the battery location o fth ecar unless (1) you have experienced such a job on this car and (2) you have spoke to a GM tech about it couse the Chilton and or Haynes manuals do not even cover this.

You forgot the other possibilities:

#3 - Searching the archives at ThirdGen.org.

#4 - Reading the schematic for the fuel pump power system.

I'm sorry you didn't get the help you were looking for, but it was there all the time. This very topic has been posted numerous times (several by myself, many times by others), along with schematics, photographs, and even details about the differences between Camaros and Firebirds in this regard.

The next time you have a problem, try searching the archives for information. There is a huge database that is easily accessed by performing a search.

Unfortunately, you may have replaced the fuel pump unnecessarily. On the bright side, you now have a known good pump and should not expect problems from it for a long time. Mine is 20 years old and working just fine. You should be able to expect that from your new one as well. No doubt that dropping the fuel tank is seldom much fun, unless you're really into that kind of pain and frustration.

The reason you did not find a safety switch is because these cars do not have a kinetic fuel pump switch. Those are commonly found on Fords, and some other models. You could also have found that you could have applied 12V power to the "G" terminal on the ALDL connector an operted the pump without even opening the hood or getting under the car. There are a lot of useful tidbits in the thread histories.

BTW - That same fuse also provides primary power to the ECM, just in case that ever comes up.

Thank you for the response. My IROC has over 200K on it so I know it was well do for oneat least it also gave me a chance to drain and fill diff fluid, change shocks (still had stock bilsteins 200K),sway bar end links and adjust me rear brakes. It is all crap I have been meaning to but never got to so at least something goo came out of it.I also will be doing the front end afterI am done with the rear. Previouse owner went through the engine and tranny so that is solid with some aftermarket goodies. irocss - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
