How can I tell what EGR solenoid I need?
My current one does not have the part number that GM wants to know. Apparently there was two kinds for 1986 305 tpi engines. I believe my current one is already an aftermarket one. So whats the difference between the two? I'm sure SOMEONE has ran into this before and knows the answer to this. THANKS!

Aftermarket replacement egr valves come with a selection of shims to be installed to match the OE valve. You may be able to tell which replacement shim that you need to install in your new valve by removing the old aftermarket valve and looking for the decimal number stamped on the shim. The hole sizes and thickness of the shims will vary and you should be able to match it even if the shim isnt stamped.

Sorry about the rabbit trail....misunderstood.
If your 8th digit in the VIN is F and you have a 305TPI motor, the egr solenoid that you need is DR631 and the part number is 1997169. Retail through GM is $53.97, wholesale is about $37.79.
Hope that works for you! If not, contact your local GM parts dealer, have your vin info ready to assist.
