Trouble setting timing

I have a 92 Formula, it has a TPI 350. I recently installed a LT4 HotCam, headers, and grinded down the wall behind the throttle body in the Plunem. When I went to set the timing, it seems to me that the computer is trying to retard the timing. The indicator on the harmonic balancer is jumping around from 6 degrees BTDC to 10 degrees BTDC then back to 6 degrees. I followed the Chilton's book on setting timing for A TPI. I unhooked the wire by the AC and I have tried to "reset the computer". This is my first TPI car and I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, if so any help would be appreciated. I have a race coming up on July 7 and would like to have this fixed by then.

If the EST bypass connector is disconnected and the timing is not steady, the distributor may have some wear. There may also be a problem with the driven gear engagement, but it's more likely a distributor bushing worn.

Ditto on what Vader said.

He's kinda smart too :-)

Also, without doing tuning on it, it might not be possible to get the base timing set accurately at 6 degrees.

Just a word to the wise.

U actually have/need a lot of tuning to make that hotcam happy in a speed density setup. Once u get it setup, its a damned nice combo
