v vs. serpentine belts

if I have a 87 350 tpi with a v-belt, can I use the serpentine setup from a 89 305 tbi...will they interchange. I was told the wiring is different?

I can get a 87 350tpi to rebuild, currently have the 89 305 TBI

The wiring should be the same. You just may have to relocate wiring or extend some of it beacuse the A/C compressor and alternator will move to opposite sides of the engine. Make sure you get all A/C lines and the power steering lines may be slightly different. You will also need a different water pump that goes with serp. (reverse rotation).

well I was thinking that all the assesories I have on the 305 could just transfer over. But some said the harnesses are different. And couldn't I use the water pump from the 305?

You could use the water pump from the 305. But the alternator and a/c compressor are different so you need to get everything from the 305.

Your alternator and A/C compressor will swap sides. If you plan on running A/C you'll have more work to do, obviously- you'll have to ask the guys who have done this for everything you'll need but I beleive it's mainly hoses and the condenser that need to be changed to match the serpentine setup. Compressor wiring connections are the same.

I'm not sure if the connector for the alternator field coil is the same between an 87 and later alternators used on a serpentine setup. For sure, extending the stock wiring but I don't know if the plug will pop right on to the new alternator.

Definitely use the water pump off the serp. motor as it's the correct (reverse rotation) one used with a serpentine setup.

thanks for all the great info, but it sounds like to much refabbing to do, I'll just wait till I find an 88-89-90, my 305 is running good, so there's no hurry...

thanks again

I would definately recommend switching to serpentine; made the underhood of my Monte look much cleaner. I thought all the thirdgen condensers exited on the pass. side, so you should be good there. You'll just need the rubber lines that mount to the compressor. You can make an alt. wiring extension/adapter from pigtails at the parts store. The later compressors also use a different connector than the earlier ones, but you can get this adapter at the parts store also.

Much cleaner and no more adding or removing washer here and there to get the pulley alignment correct. One of my most favorite modifications, that is, until the TPI swap is complete.

Pictures of where I am so far on the TPI swap (shows the serpentine setup):

I'm using a wiring harness from S10Wildside. Very good quality harness.
