Turning key long time to start!

Hey all, Seems when the Iroc (305 TPI) is cold, and I go to start it, takes a while for the key to turn over the engine. I figure like 6-9 seconds. After the car is warmed up, it turns right over in a second. Could it be a starter or alternator issue? The battery is a year old and has about 530 something like that.... for cold cranking. Any ideas as to what it could be would be appreciated!

sounds like your battery isn't putting out enough juice

starting...

I was thinking I needed a battery with at least 575 cca? Is that an idea? I have on a new fuel filter, don't think it's that. The thing of it is, I make sure NOTHING is on, not even the radio when I start the car. (Don't want to strain the battery ) Makes me mad, I will start it and not have the key turned long enough, then have to try to restart it a couple times, but making sure I hold the darn key long enough to turn her over.

I think the first thing you should do is bust out the voltometer and make sure that your alt is charging right. and make sure that your current battery is at at least 13-15v. It's possible that your battery is going bad. autozone can test your battery for bed cells. I've got an 800 cca battery in my 84 TA(carb 305) and it fires right up.

go get a battery with 630 cold cranking amps, that should do the trick. Also check your fuel filter and replace it to make sure its getting plenty of fuel on startup

If you battery was too low it wouldn't crank at all not sit there for 6 seconds and then do it.

Put a volt meter on the starter, if it's getting the correct power then I'd look at swapping it out.
