Engine Surging - PLEASE HELP
Engine Surging - PLEASE HELP
Hi all, as some may of read my semi related previous post, I'm still seeking a solution to the big problems I have.
Please read below and if anyone can suggest anything at all please, please feel free.
What I have:
1986 Pontiac Trans Am
305 TPI (Tune Port Injection)
Holley Stealth Ram
(NEW) 19Lb factory AC Delco injectors
(NEW) Factory In-tank Fuel Pump (50 psi and 24 gallons per hour)
Problems I'm having:
The engine Surges back and forth at constant rev's (approx 2000 RPM - Cursing) and breaks up at high rev's (approx 4000 RPM Held in 2 1st or 2nd gear)
Strong deep felt miss at idle.
Needs throttle to start, wont start straight off Key.
What I have done to try and fix the problem:
New AC Delco 19Lb injectors
New Spark Plugs
New Spark Plug Leads
New Ignition Coil
New Sensor Kit
New Filters
New distributor Cap and Rotor
New In-tank Fuel Pump
And after all this the Problems still remain:
I really don't know where else to turn!
The only other thing left to change is the Fuel Regulator.
I don't know if it's normal or not but I have noticed that the fuel pressure gauge on the rails shoots straight back down to 0 shortly after you turn the key off and the pump stops.

See one other thing I noticed was that the Holley Stealth Ram lists using a pump that's 44 PSI and 60 gallons per hour as to the factory one I had fitted at 50 PIS only 24 Gal per hr. Would that do it? It's still using the factory injectors so I cant see how.
See the Holley ram kit comes with a Walbro 60 Gal per Hr 44 PSI pump that's meant to be used in line, not with the in tank pump.
I was told that the factory in tank pump would be enough flow and pressure but is it possible it's not?

WHen I got the car and as it stil is now NO there is NO EGR, nothing to do with EPA stuff at all left. THe Chip thats in there is a Hypertec one, so I dont know if it had it removed or not.

Have you checked for a vacuum leak? The plastic vacuum lines on these cars can get brittle in thier old age. One of them could have snapped on you, or you could have a connection off some where.

i had the exact same symptoms and chased it for about a month and a half. i replaced iac, injectors, egr, maf power and burn-off relays, tps. i rebuilt the trottle body.....all to no avail. i was spraying some bake cleaner to clean the intake some and found a vacuum leak where the vacuum line runs to the heat/ac controls. fixed it and cured the problem. i spent hundreds of dollars and all it took was five to fix it.
Hi all , I will try to attach a picture of the Reg that's on the Holley Stealth Ram now.
The spec are, its' on a 305 TPI Trans Am with a HSR. The reg is meant to have constant 43.5 PIS NON - adjustable.
I don't think it's working correctly anyway. It does not hold any pressure once the cars off and when you rev it hard the cheap redline gauge reads it down on 30 PSI. So I'll change it anyway and then I'll know it's right.
As some here will know, I'm in Australia, so getting parts like this is a real mission and finding someone out here that sells them is going to be really hard. There is one company that will order what ever part number I tell them , but it's up to me to do all the chasing.
So any help as to where to go and mostly what part number to ask for would be a big help, especially if there was someone in Aus selling them.
I would love it if it was just a simple case of swapping it straight in, not cutting, changing or extending for a universal part or a near enough is good enough part. You know what I mean. I just want to keep it simple and fool proof.
I can add that it's using a 3/8 line and is meant to be a non - adjustable 43.5 PSI reg.
Thanks to all so far for the huge help you have offered
