Cleaning and "porting" the stock TPI runners

I found a great way to clean out and remove some material from the stock TPI runners. Keep in mind there's not alot of material to remove, but you can definetly open them up a little and there's probably 1/32in worth of crud built up in them to begin with. The process is simple, I bought a couple of the "sandblaster" wood sanding blocks from Wal Mart, cut these in half longways and jam them into the runner entries, using a pair of needlenose pliers spin the sanding blocks, move onto the other end of the runner and you'll be able to get all the way through them without much effort. It took me about 40mins to do all 8 runners and it made a big difference, I'de recommend anyone who's porting there intake or runner entries spend a little extra time and do this.

Not the best way, but sounds like it may work.

A dremel tool or a die grinder with the proper bits work well too.

There's no way to port the stock runners with a dremel tool. I used an air die grinder to open up the flanges and remove the lip, but the actual tubes can't really be done that way. The only way I could see doing it would be to use the sandpaper flap wheels on one of the flexible extensions so you could go through the runners.

I used EagleOne's Mag Wheel cleaner to clean up the runners inside and out. I really don't see much porting to be done except where the flanges meet the runners could probably be smoothed out and lightly ported to a larger gasket. Another thought would the possibility of using something larger than a master cylinder hone - the one with the flex shaft and the spuds that hang off of it.

Re: Cleaning and "porting" the stock TPI runners

I was thinking of taking mine off to polish them but I never taken them off before. Is it hard to do? I can polish aluminum NP but just dont wanna take them off if its a pain and I may run into trouble. I assume there is gaskets behind there as well. Do they sell those in a kit or individually? Appreciate the input thanks

Slayze, I bought tpi manifold gasket kit from NAPA for $15. Include new gaskets for throttle body, runners and manifold. It isn't hard to remove, just takes time as some base runner bolts are hard to get on manifold. You can unbolt throttle body from plenum and leave it hang to the side so you don't have to mess around with engine coolant tubes.

Thanks for the input. I may try and take them off eventually. Got a list of other things I wanna/need to do first. I may just bypass some of those hoses on the Throttle body and run from the heater core straight to the water pump eventually to. Anyone know if I can do away with that piece directly underneath the throttle body opening?
