Ok, here's what I'm dealing with....

I have an old 305, a '76 specifically. It's running rough, carb'ed, I want to go TPI.

I have a nearly complete TPI that I was told came off an '85 motor, so that would make it the corvette 350, right? Wasn't that the only application?

First. Will I need to swap computers or do a custom chip?

Second, I want to swap the cam, oil pump, and distributor. Any small block chevy oil pump should work, yes?

I was going to go distributor out of an '85 TPI Corvette (to make sure it clears the TPI plenum and cover).

Third, what camshaft do you recommend for this setup? Something close to stock.

You know, you really need to give more information like what kind of car is it for the computer question. An 85 TPI was also put on 305's in Camaro's and Firebirds, but they had smaller injectors. So you need to find out what you have. Get the oil pump to match the year of the block, you'll need a small cap distributor like you said. Cam depends on the entire combo, not just what you have written.

 

The computer reads: Service Number 1226870 and below that there is a bar code with the numbers 1226870255

Does this help identify it? Where should I look if not?

Ok, I followed up with the guy who sold me the TPI. It's off of an '85 Firebird, so it has to be a 305 setup.

Can someone help me with my questions above.

#1 the stock tuning will work, but for better performance i would get a custom one burned. if you get a cam larger than stock you will need a tune.

#2 just to be sure buy and hight flow pump for that year motor.

#3 the corvette cap will work great.

#4 this is a hard one. because not to many cam companies make a flat tappet that will work well with a computer. you have a few options.
-just find a cam that will work and tune it (check comp cams out)
-bring it to a machine shop and bore out the lifter bores and cam to fit a roller cam
- find a retro fit roller cam, but you must buy retro fit lifters aswell.
it really depends on what you want to do with the motor. if you just want something with some get up then go with opp. 1
if you want something bad a$$ look into the other opp.

I couldn't find it at Summit, $119.00 at Jegs, but no lifters.

that was from comps' web site. i didnt see anything about them having or not having the lifters. but most flat tappet cams come with the lifters.
