I know that I'm going to pick up a lot of slack for saying this but fo the summer you could remove the thermstat completely. I have done it and haven't had problems for the past 7,000 miles. It's great for sitting in stop and go traffic so when you get going again, it will cool down below 170 and then the next time you are at the light, it won't heat up as fast.

hmmm I dont know about that, I dont think its a good idea for me to take anything out under the hood, especially the thermostat. any other ways?!!?

Taking the T stat out can cause problems because it doesn't allow any resistance in the cooling system. If you want to run with no T stat you need to take an old thermostat and take the guts out of it to where you only have a little thermostat "cap". That should keep pressure in the system and keep the temps down.

Some food for thought, How much resistance is in the cooling system when the thermostat is fully open? Remember, the upper radiator hose will be completely full of coolant and the entire system will be moving so once again, what is the point of a thermostat when you don't need heat in the summer?

It's called heat transfer. The water needs to spend a little bit of time inside of the radiator in order to cool down, thus cooling the engine better. If the flow is too fast through the radiator then the water doesn't get a chance to cool down enough. Would you rather have colder or warmer water running through your engine?

I bought a termo at the part store that has holes in it with little metal pins that let coolant through before it opens

I have never had a problem with the thermostat taken out of my car. As far as if the free mods work or not, I can tell you for a fact that it did do alot! I know some people feel that the G-tech is a POS but according to it, with just some of the mods listed here, I dropped four tenths in the quarter! That is a HUGE difference. Take it from the senior members and moderators, the mods that they tell you actually work! They don't have time to BS you!

This is the thermostat I run in my car. Notice the large holes drilled in it. It comes from Stewart components and is recomended for use in any performance application and MUST be used with Stewart stage 2 and up water pumps.

IMO cutting the springs is just plain crazy! Plus you both are saying "if they are done correctly they are OK!" my response to that is this...if someone is so concerned about lowering their car and can't afford to get the $200 springs needed to do it properly do you honestly think they will take the time to do it properly or spend the money for someone to do it properly for them? yes there are some who may but my bet is that it will be done half assed (probably a grinder to the springs in any random spot and hope it works) and done improperly.

I assume you were some sort of mechanics apprentice following a checklist. Its a simple process and it bumps the spring rate slightly. Just in case you dont know how to do it "properly", here's a how-to:

I think you just fall into that category of sheep that eats up whatever car craft or <insert magazine here> tells you is an amazing part for only half a paycheck.
TL;DR: This guy's blow hard, cutting springs is OK provided you follow the simple procedure and calculate the rate change.

I think cutting springs is a double edged sword. ...since the thread is called "FREE" mods, I certainly think cutting springs would be one of them! ...the problem is, it CAN be done correctly, and it CAN perform perfectly. ....or....you can get your spring rates all jacked up and the car can handle horribly. I looked into it for my Iroc before I bought my Eibach pro-kit, and my biggest issue was that depending on exactly what springs you have, and assuming you cut, let's say 1 coil off, all the springs are going to sit differently once compressed, and will perform differently. What I like about buying an aftermarket set, is that you KNOW the final ride height, and you KNOW the spring rates. Assuming the springs are good quality, you can choose exactly what you're getting.
....but....cutting springs HAS been around forever, and it works! It's certainly worthy of being considered a FREE mod. ...I just think if you're gonna go that route, you need to do your homework. I did, and chose to go aftermarket. Doesn't mean it's right or wrong, it was just the direction I chose to go.
...and FWIW, the Eibach's perform wonderfully! (with aftermarket shocks/struts as well)

Yeah, def no problem with cut springs. Thats exactly how they were made anyway.
You just don't want a bunch of heat in the spring from cutting it. Put it in a bucket of water, pull out the section you are cutting and cut it off with a cutoff wheel.
