Ditching TBI going TPI 383...help please

Ok I've beem in the tbi crowd for about 4 or 5 years now and its been fun. I've built up my tbi 305 to get in in the low 14 sec range and is beating mustang 5.0s like a snap. But now I want to go to the next level and be able to take on ls1's and built lt1's. So I am really not sure what to do right now because I have so many option like TPI, LT1, or LS1. Its just really hard to decide right now. Maybe you guys can convince me on which engine I should purchase. I really don't want to go LS1 because of the price but I know they lay down some nasty et's with just a few mods. Are the lt1's any good or should I even waste my time looking for one? My next option is TPI. I can pick up a 1989 camaro iroc-z here locally that has the 350 TPI(L98) for $900 bucks. The engine runs but the car is beat to hell and has literally no floorboards. So I was thinking I would just buy the car for the engine and part out the rest of the car. I could use the old wiring harness and everything else I would need from that car. So what do you guys think of this idea? I would proably build a 383 stroker with a nasty cam and maybe a nice pair of heads? I really don't know all that much about the L98 and how they perform with certain parts, so you guys need to fill me in. Also how hard would the wiring swap be because the tpi is maf. Also would my gauges work like the speedometer. And would my tranny hook up the tpi wiring harness? If I'm missing anyhting please tell me because I am really serious about this swap.

Re: Ditching TBI going TPI 383...help please

im in the process of doing a swap sort of like yours i started with a 305 4bbl carb and now i have a built 350 that i am putting the tpi on. i havent gotten the tpi from ups yet its coming this week some time. but from what i hear that the 305 tpi set up the middle bolt holes for the intake have to be elongated to fit the 350 heads which i dont know about because i thought all the heads were the same. but i dont think that there should be any problems with the transmission fitting to the transmission. im going to be starting the wireing this week or early next week im taking the wire harness apart to rerun all the wires neatly in the engine bay so it looks neat. if i come accross any problems ill besure to notify you. but like i said from the research that i have done it doesnt look like there will be a problem with the transmission.

Whats the goal? I've beaten an LS1 car at the track with a 15 sec TPI so... what kind of ET are you looking for? mid 13's? Low 12's? A 383 TPI running well and with appropriate suspension will fall somewhere in the 12's depending on whats on top of the motor.

l-98 is capable of 11 sec ETs also, but if you want to be different its your option.the stock style tpi intake is your biggest restriction, all 3 engines are great platforms for power

Im in the same boat here as well,i have a 92rs im ditching the tbi 305 for a tpi350 i have been looking and doing research i think alot of the harnes from the tbi will work with the mpi i had 1 guy tell me that it does need some other work but most of the sensors and harness will work, but he did say i will need another ecm, fuel pump and some other minor things.Let us know the progress and what you decide...Steve

BTW i know this is off the topic but if you wanna get rid of any of the tbi stuff let me know i could always use the intake for my truck
