Low oil pressure. and need to check compression too.

hi all,
the past couple weeks i've noticed my oil pressure dropping only at idle and in drive. It's reading about 10-12 PSI at idle and in drive. When i gas her up i get good oil pressure. This kidda sucks, it's on a 88 vette. My questions are what are oil pumps people us on there cars TPI? Also about what PSI at idle is normal? Should i get a high val pump? Is it a nightmare to pull the pan off a 88 vette (vette guys). Also i'm going to do a compression check before all this. what is the best way to test compression like how many cranks and what PSI is good. Will low oil pressure cause it to run like crap or weak, does it cut fuel or something?? it seems shes weaker.

thanks guys

A stock oil pump is all you need.
Low oil pressure won't cut fuel. Too low ~4psi IIRC and if you have the oil pressure/fuel pump switch will just shut you off. There's no kinda running.
You might want to plumb in a mechanical gauge to make sure it's not your sender or gauge giving you incorrect readings. My daily driver bird has a high volume pump and my gauge stays pegged constantly.

On a compression test you should see a fast rise on the first crank and slower each successive crank. Pull all the plugs when you do it and don't forget to shut off the fuel and spark. There is no set number for compression. I believe you're basically looking to see that all the cylinders are within 10% of each other. With that being said, PERSONALLY I like to see 170psi +.
