difference in 87 and 88 formula tpi engines
I need to know if there is a differnce in the intakes and air ducts from the air box up to the throttle body. because on Ebay there is a intake system for 88 and 89 formulas and the company said it will not work an my 87. I know we need the maf adaptor for the 87-89 show whats the difference.

yea idk ive also noticed that they only offer supercharges from vortech for 88-92. i think thats when they got rid of the cold start injector but i could be wrong. i kno that speed density didnt come out till 89 soo i would think it would all be the same, thats the only diff in runners is the coldstart injector hole. as far as i kno the intake ducting is the same. and the TB's as well.

thank you guys. I had a feeling there were no changes. I will just need the maf adaptor to go whit this intake ducting.

There is a difference between the two.The 88 has a round hose about three inches 'round that goes to the maf and then another that goes to the filter canister. The 87 has a box that bolts to the radiator support I believe. If you replace the whole intake system it would work just fine.
Re: difference in 87 and 88 formula tpi engines
what do you mean by maf adapter? i am going to do a CAI tonight when i get out of work but i have not looked at the MAF yet... does it just need a 3" to 3" adapter or could i just have my air filter mount right on to the maf?

Yeah, the 86/87 intake/filter system on a Firebird is different than the 88-up. The 86/87 is what I call the "boxes and elbows" setup. Electronically speaking, it's the same as 88-up but the 88-up got a much simpler and probably better flowing intake setup. It's easy to put an 88-up intake system on an 86/87. Basically, a bolt-on.
Yes, you can run a filter right on the end of the MAF. I did this on several 87 Firebird TPI cars. I used an 88-up Firebird TPI intake elbow between the TB and the MAF and then hose-clamped a conical filter on the front of the MAF. It was sort of a rig-job as there's nothing to support the MAF from sagging the elbow down with the weight of the filter hanging off the end. A better setup would be to do something similar but run a pipe off the other end of the MAF and get the filter over near the hole in the pass. side fender where you could actually attach it to something that would hold it up (and probably draw in colder air).
The reason they don't have blower setups for the 86/87 is that is uses an odd V-belts-plus-serpentine front accessory setup, sahred with neither earlier or later cars. The 88-up is a true single belt serpentine setup. Again, the 86/87 is upgradable to an 88-up true serpentine setup but the alternator and A/C compressor switch sides on the motor which means the wiring and A/C lines have to be redone to make it work.
