Ignition cutting out when hot

I was driving home from Vegas on Sunday it was about 100F outside and I was in traffic on the freeway and suddenly my car started popping and backfiring whenever I pressed the throttle more than about 25%. It idled fine but felt like the ignition totally turned off under load.

I let the car cool down on an offramp for an hour and then it ran fine for about an hour until I hit slow traffic again.

Should I replace the ignition module to start? Could it be anything else? I have new wires, plugs, rotor, and cap.

Thanks,

Dave

Pick up coil, ign module or coil.

Was it a clean cut or a stumble type cut?

Ohm out the injectors also, when they go south and start intermittenlty overloading the drivers in the ecm.

later

Re: Ignition cutting out when hot

It was a clean cut power loss. Tons of backfiring.

So I went to install the new ignition module today, but the 2 wire connector inside the distributor broke so I don't know which color wire goes on which pin of the module?? I have a green wire and a white wire, and the module has a P and N terminal.

What happens if I install it backwards?

Thanks

Re: Ignition cutting out when hot

The distributor I just looked at has the white on N and the green on P. If connected in reverse the engine won't run right. And strange things happen between having the EST connector (bypass) open and closed.

RBob.

Wow thanks a ton! I have it hooked up backwards and the engine is not too happy.. I hope it did not damage the module.

Re: Ignition cutting out when hot

Check that the rotor to #1 plug, and the reluctor... is in phase with the magnet inside the dist. If its off at all, the spark has to jump further from the rotor to the post, and could jump to the next plug causing a backfire!
