Good Cam for a Stealth ram & Aluminum Heads

Hello,

I just picked up a '91 Formula with a 350. The car has SLP headers, Random Tech Cat Back exhaust, MSD Ignition, Trick Flow Aluminum heads with 2.02 intake vavles, it also has a Holley Stealth ram with 24lbs. injectors.

But it does have a stock cam and stock throttle body. So I am going to throw in a new cam and a 58mm throttle body. But my question is what would be a good cost effective choice for a cam? Should I get bigger injectors or are 24# enough?

The cars computer is stock so I will also be taking it in for a custom chip after cam swap. Also may run nitrous later.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Garrett

To keep those injectors, aim for about a <=214 @.050" intake duration

If you want to go to 28's or 30's get a >220 @.050" intake duration

In between is fuzzy.

XFI268 hyd roller would be what I'd get if buying new. LT4 hotcam if you can get a good deal.

You can go nastier if you want...

XFI268 and don't look back, the hotcam is old hat. Pass on the TB as well, use the money to buy some fuzzy dice.

Not to get too far off track, but I'd really like to find out how it runs now, before adding the cam & tune - I'm thinking about installing my HSR & AFR 195s onto my stock short-block (just to get me through the summer until I do the LQ4 swap, probably this winter). I don't want to get into anything that'll go TOO far from stock, since I don't want to put a lot of effort into the L98 setup since it's going to be pretty short-term...

FWIW, I already have the heads & intake, just need to get gaskets & a few of the other supporting pieces... Thanks.

Re: Good Cam for a Stealth ram & Aluminum Heads

Hey guys thanks for the advice.

I forgot to mention that the heads have 1.5 Gold roller rocker arms. I see that the XFI268 calls for 1.6 rockers, will I need to change? Also this is the website I found from JEGS that sells them http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...I268&x=13&y=11

This is the cam you are talking about right? the 12-466-8 for $259.99, or is there a better price somewhere else. With computer tuning is the .570 lift going to still run OK? I want to use this car as a street/strip car, So it has to be somewhat decent on the road.

You guys have been a huge help already but I want to get the right cam the first time. Also you guys think that the stock Throttle bodies will be OK for this set-up? I am trying to shoot for 350hp to the wheels but more is always better . I'm not really a Tuned Port modding guy I have mostly been in to carbs before but I like the way the fuel injected cars are laying down awesome numbers so I thought I would give it a shot.

Again thanks, and please be patient I'm sure there will be more questions.

Garrett

Hey,
To answer your question the car runs pretty well right now. It runs neck and neck with my '98 LS1 6 speed from the hole to about a 100mph. The formula dominates out of the hole but the LS1 pulls hard on it from about 60 up. From a 30 mph roll the LS1 just makes it look silly but that the LS1 doing it's job. Hopefully after I put the bigger cam, remove cats and smog equipment, install bigger injectors, and reprogram the computer the LS1 will be looking pretty silly next to the older brother L98 (But that probably because the L98 has that extra 4 cubic inches ).

Also if anyone is still listening, will I have any problems with valve clearence on a cam that big. My brother is having huge issues with his mustang and a cam over .540 lift but I'm thinking it got everything to do with the different valve train geometry of a ford.

And the cam I posted earlier is the one you guys are talking about right?

Thanks, Garrett

Don't know about that. If you get yourself a stall speed converter, w/the additional tuning alone, you'd probably stay with the LS1 starting from that speed. Don't forget that your running an LS1 w/6-Speed from a roll, even with the mods your suggesting, without the stall, the LS1 would probably still pull you....
