suggestions on setup 91 firebird L98
Whats up guys my set up is a lingenfelter lower, slp runners, ported upper, long tubes, custom 2.5 ypipe to a dynomax racemuffler and a tune. My new setup is a freshend stock shortblock w/ lunati cam and opening the whole intake up, stock heads w/ 3angle valve job and ported. The whole car is gutted no ac has power steering. It currnetly has the 700r4 but switching to a built th350 w/ 2200 and it has 3:27's gears let me know what you think. The cam is 294/297 at 50 and 498 lift

I'm no expert, but looking at the info you provided, I'd say you'd really benefit from an aftermarket set of heads that flow better, and a Holley Stealth Ram to improve your breathing capabilities. That cam won't reach its full potential with ported, stock heads, and even a ported/enlarged TPI intake. It'll probably run, it just won't be optimized. A cam with those specs will want to shine in the higher rpms, which is where the stock heads/TPI system start to run out of steam. Another thing that would benefit your cam would be to step up to 3.70 rearend gears to get you in your power range quicker. I'm kinda facing the same dilemna with my setup. I've ported my stock heads really good, and I'm running a bit smaller cam than you, but it'll probably still want to flow more than the heads can support. Just my .02.

The cam mentioned before is actually a Lunati Street Master, 235/235 @.50 with 490/490 lift. The cams range is 1500-6200. Its advertised duration is 290/297.

I have heard you can take stock heads to a 180cc intake head is this not true??
Re: suggestions on setup 91 firebird L98
Hmmmm, I'm not sure if you can achieve 180 cc's with a L98 head no matter how wild you go with the porting. I'm betting you could see that number with some port work on a set of vortec heads though. From what I remember reading about the vortecs, they're pretty close to 180 on the intake ports in stock form. A couple of things about that Lunati cam concern me too. .235 duration @ .050 is a LOT of duration for a TPI. They're usually happier with durations around .210 to .220. Also, with stock heads, you usually run better with a more split pattern type cam that has more lift and duration on the exhaust side. This is due to the weak flow of the exhaust ports on factory heads from what I've been told. Not sure what your LSA is, but a 112 or higher LSA is a lot easier to tune. The cam I chose for mine is the Comp XR269HR, PN#08-502-8 (218/224 duration, .495/.503 lift, and 112 LSA). From what I've been told from other members here, even that cam is going to pushing it with ported factory heads and a modded TPI intake. I'm using an Accel base, siamesed SLP runners, fully ported plenum, and a 52 mm TB. The cam that was actually recommended on mine is one step down from the one I chose. The recommended one is the Comp XR264HR, PN#08-501-8. I chose to go one step bigger since I've got the Superram plenum and runners to go with the Accel base. Once I get a better flowing set of heads, I'll throw the Superram plenum/runners on, and hopefully be able to use the same cam.
