Hard to start when cold after tpi swap
Hard to start when cold after tpi swap
I just completed a tpi swap on my 82 trans am. The car runs fine when warm, however the first time i start the car after its been setting all night, it is very very hard to start. I have to crank the engine for 5 sec 6-8 times for the car to start. It has a walbro 255lph pump, TPIS adjustable regulator which reads just below 47-48psi at idle with vac line removed. It has an 85 TPI setup with the cold start valve. I hooked a noid light to the cold start valve connector and it does come on when im cranking the engine (although dimly). The fuel pump is coming on when the key is in the on position and stays on for 2 sec before cranking. One thing ive noticed that doesnt sound right is that when the pump comes on for 2 sec , I hear a gurgle sound as the fuel moves in the rail. As the engine runs, i also hear a loud high pitch sound coming from what sounds like the fpr area. any thoughts?

Did you vent the fuel rails after you completed the installation and the initial pump start up? I had to run my pump and blead least a gallon of gas to get all the air out.

No i did not realize this was neccessary. how did you accomplish this? Wouldn't any air bubbles work themselves out over the course of time since the system empties back into the tank which kind of is like bleeding?

You do not have to bleed any air out of the system. check the coolant temp sensor for the ECM on front of the TPI manifold. if its not connected or defective it will give starting issues.
