87 TPI WONT START HELP!!!! URGENT

ok, the widow wont start hears what happened;

car woudent start
got gas
car still woudent start
pluged in computer (I know, im a douche)
car starts, runs strong for about 10 min (let it run just to see if it would stall, it didnt)
shut car down
20 min latter class was over and the car woudent start, didnt even sound like it was firing...damit, and the engine worked just fine.
computer was plugged in, and the tank has gas in it. The starter ingaged, and it started the first time, but only ran for a few seconds, did the same thing the second time, and after that, nothing, just the starter

please any pointers? my teacher will kill me if we have to push the car everywere....we all know how heavy they are.

and just one other thing, my brakelight stays on all the time...even tho its clearly down..it was connect to a brown wire when the car started, so in trying to unplug it, the little metel clip came off, so theres no cable connected to it right now. would that affect it?

HELP ME!!!!!

-Carter

Re: 87 TPI WONT START HELP!!!! URGENT

What all else is going on with the car. THere is more to this story.....why else would the computer just be "unplugged"? Unplug the ecm again, and CLOSELY look at ALL the pins on the ecm, make sure none are bent over and that all are nice and straight so they can properly make contact in the connector.

Ok, that explains it then, no disrespect. Just too many times people don't like to tell the full story for some reason, I see it alot being a Tech. Anywho, just start checking the obvious, easy stuff first.

First are there any mods to the motor, is the SES light on? Chech the fuel pressure (45psi) Check for spark (at the plugs), see if the injectors are fireing,
there may not be any, but check it for codes.

no mods, cat removed, no ses light, will check the FP, has spark, dunno about the injectors, and going to check codes on monday. I think it might just be really really flooded lol

a fuel injected car should never flood. If a fuel injected car is flooding out, there is a serious fuel system problem causing raw gas to dump into the cylinders, via stuck open injectors. Definitely check the fuel pressure first, just by hooking up the gauge, and turning the key to the RUN position. Make sure to watch how fast it builds, and how long it STAYS there. Should build almost instantly to about 35-40 lbs range, and then drop a few pounds at most and hold steady. If it builds quick, then drops right off, you got some stuck open injectors, or the cold start injector is leaking as well. If the fuel pressure checks out, check the resistance in all the injectors, should all ohm out to 14-16 ohms, no lower, or higher. Verify the injectors have power, use a noid light to do so. Also, check the 10 amp fuse by the battery tray in a little fuse holder...if its blow, it kills the fuel pump and ecm. Car is brain dead without it. Good luck.

EDIT: You said the car has spark, so the ECM/Fuel pump fuse is not blown.

Re: 87 TPI WONT START HELP!!!! URGENT

I dont really have a way to check my FP right now...and about a 10 amp fuse in a little holder....it woudent happen to be connected to a red wire would it? cause I pulled a red wire with a fuse holder out of my engine bay, both ends were not connected to anything, and after snooping a little, I noticed there are a few more wires, I think there green, right behing the intake that arnt connected to anything either.

This may or maynot help, mine would just start and die, looked for the problem for weeks, it ended up being the Coolent Temp. Sensor, it tells the ECM what temp. the coolent is, I know it wont run w/out it working right.
Also check the AIR TEMP. SENSOR.

Good luck.

will the car stay running if you spray carb cleaner into the TB? if not look at the coolent temp. sensor.
