help with base timing and total timing...
Recently I completed a cam/head swap. Out came a regroung LT1 cam and TF heads and in went a ZZ9 cam and AFR190 heads.
With the LT1 cam, I installed the cam at 4 degrees advanced. The ZZ9 cam is installed straight up.
Here, is my question:
The LT1 cam liked about 8* static timing. The ZZ9 cam likes 14* static timing!!! At 8 degrees the ZZ9 cam will stall out or run very rough.
Do I have the distributor installed wrong?
The rotor points toward the #5 intake vavle when at firing TDC.
Also, while setting the static timing with the ecm distributor wire unplugged, my scanner is reading 31* timing!!!! How can this be?????

Doc this is just a guess...but i think yer in diagnostic mode with yer scanner...with my OTC and any 87 Pontiac you must program the scanner for road test(normal mode).Just hooking on the scanner without choosing road test mode puts the computer into diagnostic mode (1000rpm idle speed....full timing advance)
