PUFF AND SMOKE (need help quick)
OK I just finished putting my car together. My problem is that when its on it backfiring and throwing out black smoke.
It is an 88 GTA 5.7 and I have done some pretty extesive mods which were done all at the same time. I dont think the mods are my problem but just in case this is what I put in it. 58mm TB , ported plenum, SLP runners SLP 1 3/4 headers, Edelbrock base, ported heads,210-220-480 cam,and an ATI procharger but i have the belt off right now till i get the engine running right. I get no codes on the computer so IM stumped. I have checked timing,and firing order. any advise will help.

Might need a custom PROM with that cam. Although it''s not radical by any means, it may be big enough to merit a custom PROM. Black smoke usually means you are rich. Could also be an MAF problem, but you are throwing no codes. Make sure that the distributor is in right also, could be 180* off.

Its backfiring through the intake or exhaust? Is your harmonic balancer fairly new? I had similar problems, realized that my balancer slipped and my timing was off. I would say that you definitely do need a custom prom with all that work. You're sure you've got the valves set correctly?
