Powercoated Plenum and Runners?

I'm about to order Runners for my L98 from SLP and when I go to install them I'm planning to do a real cleaning and port/polish to the plenum too.

But...I've been thinking about something else too. Chrome power-coating the plenum and runners. I've already power-coated my hood hinges and will be doing a few other various brackets too. Power-coating the plenum and runners would really set things off...but is it worth while? Could it be harmful?

Has anyone done this before? If so, any tips? Images?

Thanks!

Re: Powercoated Plenum and Runners?

Great idea, although I'm not a huge fan of "chrome" powder. Looks REAL good, .....but....not quite as good as real chrome or polish IMHO. Any other color is well worth it!!!

Talk to Chris at CE Coatings. He does AWESOME work, and he does headers too. He did a great job on mine. Unfortunately for Chris, my best bud just started doing powdercoating, and he doesn't charge me!!!! LOL

....here's a link to my TPI in silver

Re: Powercoated Plenum and Runners?

i got runners and lower manifold powder coated from a guy on ebay and they looked great until i was working on my truck and laid my sweaty arm across the runners and where my arm had been, the "chrome" turned to a blackish color but it doesn't stand out all that bad. he accused me of getting some kind of chemical on them and offered to pay for half. i did some research and found that a clear powder over the top of the chrome should have been applied for durability. i asked him about it and he said they only did that if the customer requested it. but all the info i found indicated that they were just half assing the work.

here is a pic of mine during assembly, prior to getting the "stains" on the runners. the chrome powder blends fairly well with the rest of the polished stuff, but obviously doesn't have the same "depth". if i had SLP runners, i'd polish them, but my stock ones were dented and fixing the dents was part of the deal with powdercoating and i didn't want highly polished dents.

oh, another tip, make sure you tell them to install some bolts in the threaded holes. i KNOW it's obvious and they should do it automatically, but mine weren't done and i had to tap all the threaded holes to get the powder out.

Sounds like they gave you a 2 stage PC job without doing the second stage (clear). The clear though dulls chrome PC.
A single stage chrome PC doesn't look too bad but nothing compares with actual chrome or polished.

I opted for polished on all my crap.
