How to tell what engine a TPI was from?
How to tell what engine a TPI was from?
I was given a TPI setup that seems to be fairly complete from the manifold up. (Manifold, runners, Throttle Body, etc...), no computer, harness, or distributor.
I guess I am trying to find out if there is a diff between the TPI setup for the 305 and 350, or if they are interchangable?
How would I find out what motor this was meant for or would work on?
I'm interested in doing a TBI to TPI swap on my 305, but I have no information on this unit.
Thanks for the help.

The only difference that I know of is between F body and Y body. The fittings on the fuel rails on a Y body come straight out instead of angling down towards the drivers side of the car.

Glad to hear some good news. Sounds like for the most part this is a very usable setup for my 305 with maybe some slight mods.
Thanks for the help

Check the EGR valve on the base...if it's directly beneath the plenum it came from an F body.
If it's on the right side of the base near the back, it's from a Vette.

The only way to tell if it is from a 350 or 305 is by the injectors. Check out the part number on them. I have a listing on my web page that lists the 80's ones.

With an AFPR, you should be able to run a 305 setup on a 350, and I suppose the opposite is true.
Now the hard part, trying to find a wiring harness.
Mark.

I guess since the parts I have were sort of hand me down from a relative who had them sitting in a garage (bought at a swap meet at one point), I don't mind spending a little on a haress and computer when it comes time for the switch.
I'll look at it tonight or tomorrow when I get a chance and see if I can see any of the diffrences anyone mentioned.
Thanks again for the help

Won't have to spend much on the ECM either. Just get the ECM out of an early-mid 90s FWD MPFI 3.1 Berretta/Lumina. Its the same ECM as the TPI, just a different PROM. Get a custom PROM.
Good deal, thanks for everyone's help.
John, I may take you up on that offer, but it'll likely be next spring or so by the time I even think about reworking the engine.
I'm trying to get everything setup for IASCA again. (car audio comp for those who aren't familiar), so the electronics come first, then I'll deal with the engine since it technically runs good now
I would have never thought to look into an ECM from a 3.1L, thanks for the tip Glenn.
catch y'all laters

GP, you happen to know what year setup it is? The ECM mentioned is for the SD systems. And there are variences in the MAF systems too. You have any pics?
Haven't a clue on the year, but here is a link to two pics.

Aww, Max, ya beat me to it. WUWT?!?
GP, Max nailed it, it's an '89 set up, so you will have to plan appropriatly with regard to the heads and ECU you use. Hope we helped.
