Dying fuel pump, I think?

I have '87 305 TPI

Does the fuel pump in these cars just die or does it go slowly, in a way that would drive you crazy... When it's going does it make any weird nosies. Thanks

Mine died a slow death, although I had it replaced before it died. I had starved it of fuel in an auto-x, at which time it started acting up. The sound when priming it was more of a groaning sound than a strong "whirrr", and then the engine started bucking pretty bad under part-throttle conditions. Testing with a fuel pressure gauge taped to the windshield confirmed it was the fuel pump since the pressure would wildly fluctuate when the engine was bucking, and the pressure would fall several psi during a WOT run. I bought the high-volume Walbro pump from Ron Gregory from less than $100 (includes the installation kit too!) and that fixed my fuel-pressure problems.

Mine lasted 8-9 months before it really got bad. I drove it another 1-2 months like that until I ordered the pump and had it installed. But, it could just crap out on you at anytime...

Since I bought my car, the fuel rail wouldn't hold any pressure when you turned the key. Shot up to 45 then bled off immediately. It ran fine though. It finally took a dump a couple months ago. I was driving home and all of a sudden the car died. No sputter, no nothing. It was like I put it into neutral and just shut the key off.
