3:73's too much gear???
as a lot of you guys know im been fighting what i feel is too low a trap speed ,101.01.ZZ4 with simese runners ported intake and plenum,19# inj with stock 305 chip DOH! and an apperox 2400 converter, going through the traps at around 5200,even with the mild intake mods i dont think this car will make much more HP higher up.Ive seen a ot of you guys run really good MPH with higher gears.A small amount of converter slippege probly but not a lot.does my thinking make sense?I believe im limited MPH wise do to to gears.Best pass 13.707@101.02 with a2,16 60ft,not flooring it till about 30 ft out.any replies apprieciated
thanks

Well I would imagine that if you have a somewhat stock 305 with the small injectors still in place and with out a hi-po ignition you will not make power over 5000rpms. Now on the other hand you get you a set of 22# injectors and MSD and a chip, with a few other mods and I have seen people pulling to 6000rpms. I don't recomend this but it can be done. Now with that said I thik you should go with 3.42's in your car. Though if you plan on more mods in the future that will improve HP in the upper RPMs then go with the 3.73s and do it right the first time. I hjave waited to do the gears and heads last on my car to see where my budget would allow me to go. On this engine and until I get out of college and by a T56 and a 383 I am going with 3.73 and ,ost likely Vortex heads. Hope this helps any.

I am suprised the car is running that hard with the stock tuning, injectors, and base.
In my opinion that is a pretty nice time considering your lack of tuning. (No flame inteded)
Custom tuning and injectors, and maybe a complete high flow intake - base, runners, and plenum should put you where you want to be, in my opinion.

you need more air runners/manifold), more fuel (injectors/regualtor/chip), and less gear.
the tpi is a torquey monster and if trap speed is whats desired ya gotta have some shallower gears. you may want to try a friends set of rears that are an 1-1.5inch taller. if that works up the ratio. id believe the modified intake will flow with injectors and tuning will scroll the 3.42 just fine. and faster too...
