fan question

what temp does the factory fans come on on a 87 iroc w/ a dual fan setup? what one is the primary (pass or driver), and when does the secondary come on? also, when i start my car, the needle on the temp guage, jumps up all the way past 260 and gets stuck up behind the metal part of the gauges, i have to take all the plastic stuff off, and push it back down, then when i start it agin, it gets stuck, what is the problem? bad gauge? bad sending unit? wiring problem? any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

the cooling fan on the left comes on 1st via the computer @225F...the right cooling fan is controled by a bimetal switch located in the right cly.head comes on at @240F.Now for the temp gauge fix....this is gonna sound a little strange but it works.Take the covers off and make a stop that will limit the travel of the needle.....but put it up far enough so when the covers are on you don't see it.Now when you start the car and voltage spikes the gauge up it will not over travel and get stuck

if your gauge shoots to the top, first check for an open in the wiring to the sensor. It is located by your #1 spark plug. Then check it with another gauge. Plenty of them at the junkyard.
