Stock Diameter Valve Springs

1) How much lift will stock valve spings handle? or

2) Will stock springs work with the Xtreme cam that I want to get? It has 212/218 dur @.050, and .487/.495 lift.

3) If not, who makes a stock diameter spring that will work with the cam that I mentioned above? Comp doesn't.

Reason being, I have the factory 083 cast iron heads. I pocket ported them myself, but I neglected to have the valve spring seats machined when I had engine apart.

BTW, the engine is out of an 88' and springs have about 70,000 miles on them.

Somebody made a post about these a few days ago. I was hoping that I'd see an answer, but no body replied.

i'd say no to the stock springs. are you sure comp doesn't make a spring for the cam? that seems odd. if comp doesn't, or even if comp does i'd go to lunati. they make a lot of stock diameter springs.

Once you get the cam, the cam spec sheet will recommend springs. If you don't have this sheet, go to compcams.com and look the cam up and find it's sheet. If all this fails, call crower and they'll hook you up. I have springs and retainers from them.

I do not belive your stock springs will handle that much lift. I also have a set of ported 083 heads off of a 1987 GTA and I am running stock diameter springs that can handle up to .600 lift. With these springs I had to use special keepers that raised the retainer installed height up .050. I have an installed height of 1.750 verse standard installed height of 1.700. I also had to machine my valve guides down .100 so I wouldn't have retainer to guide interfearance. With your lift, I do not believe you will have to machine your guides down, but you need to check that. I bought the spring from my local engine builder so I do not know who makes them. If you need to know this information send me an e-mail and I will give you his phone number.

that'd be a neat trick to run 1.25 dia. spring up to .6 lift without any coil bind. the special retainers sound like standard aftermarket parts to replace the stock retainers and rotaters. i'd like to know more about them.

I just ordered Crane's H-11 springs from Summit for $108. They will handle up to .600" lift, and are stock diameter. I hope i don't need the retainers.
Thanks for the replies.
