Fuel pump running constantly now...HELP!!!!
I tried to find the fuel pump test jumper near my a/c unit on passenger side harness...dont see it anywhere.
I tried jumping my ALCL connector between G and ground....still didnt work.
Then I figured I'd try jumping from the fuel pump relay connector(While unplugged from relay)between E (in line fuse) and c (pump relay controll) BAD IDEA......Blew the fuse.
After I replaced fuse & turned key to run, pump primes and never stops. What did i screw up?????

Re: Fuel pump running constantly now...HELP!!!!
sounds like you shorted hot to ground to pop a fuse wiring diagrams would be helpful try tracing wires to see what controls the coil on the relay also if the fuse is the link between your hotwire and the coil on the relay then maybe you jumpered that directly to your fuel pump in that case the fuse is not designed to carry that much current either, nor is the device that controls the coil for the relay. In either case case you may have screwed up the device that controls the coil on the relay

I was using the diagram.I unplugged the relay altogether and jumped the connectors on the relay plug.

Re: Fuel pump running constantly now...HELP!!!!
on your relay connector there are only two wires you can jumper without shorting anything I am not much on car electronics but am an electronics tech in a steel mill. some relays have a diagram on them to show which terminals are for the coil and which are for the device you want energize and in some instances deenergize. now if the pump is shutting off when you turn the key off then the relay is probably good. but when you turn the key on the pump runs and should shut off if car is not running. if pump stays on then the device that controls when to energize the coil on the relay is not working properly. not sure what device does this may be ECM itself or there may be a fuel pressure switch that shuts it off when you build up so much pressure. Thats just a guess but I would have to read the prints to see what actually controls this to be sure

Re: Fuel pump running constantly now...HELP!!!!
Im hoping one of the TPI gurus will chime in and tell me what i killed.
from looking at the diagram, its a 12 volt signal from the ECM. I hope i didnt fry it, but I think so.
As long as i can drive it until I can replace Whatever is N/G I'll feel a little better.

Re: Fuel pump running constantly now...HELP!!!!
you could try disconnecting the battery as this will be like cycling power to your ECM. I have fixed several things at work this way

Re: Fuel pump running constantly now...HELP!!!!
Nhra, I tried unplugging the battery ....same thing.
1989gta,
I will try that. I show oil pressure on the guage though. I saw that on the diagram too.....(oil press switch)
The car will run and drive, just never stops priming if you turn key to run/accy without starting. I cant believe how stupid I was to do this.
Im gonna probaly foul my plugs eventually.

Ill try to scan the page and post it. I want to test that oil pressure sending unit tomorrow like 1989gta said.

Re: Fuel pump running constantly now...HELP!!!!
Diagram right here: http://www.austinthirdgen.org/mkport...ine_wiring.gif
If I understand it right, you put the relay back and now the pump runs with the key ON? That would point to a blown ECM output (what you called pump relay control). You can live with it for now but the only way to fix it would be to replace (or repair) the ECM.
Hope this helps.

how many terminals are there on your fuel pump relay?

Re: Fuel pump running constantly now...HELP!!!!
The relays have 5 terminals. 3 on the power (switched) side, 2 on the control (actuating) side.
Lou
P.S.: Wrapper, if you have a TV/stereo repair shop close by, you can ask them how much it would cost to replace the burned out transistor in the ECM. Or you can do it yourself if you're handy with electronics.

Re: Fuel pump running constantly now...HELP!!!!
looking at the diagram there is also a fuel pump switch not sure what this or why its there but when that switch is on then fuel pump is on if that switch operated by fuel pump relay then it is your ECM otherwise may be another device controlling that switch. but diagram doesn't show ECM controlling that switch

Re: Fuel pump running constantly now...HELP!!!!
Are you talking about the oil pressure fuel pump switch? It is a back up switch in case the ECM fails to activate the fuel pump, then this switch turn the pump on once you build up oil pressure.

yes, the diagram just labels it as a fuel pump switch but I didn't know what it was for. but knowing that it is definitely the ECM

Re: Fuel pump running constantly now...HELP!!!!
I'm with ya, bud.
Same crappy week here. Including a car-down situation when I took the distributor out last night to go get it tested at AutoZone. Brought it back home, dropped it in (correctly, it's NOT 180* off ) and the car won't start, no matter what I do. No spark. I think that test fried it.
On top of that, I don't have my truck back either (was supposed to today) so I'm limited to car parts stores that are within biking distance.
Hope the weekend goes well for all of us!!
