Where to start?

I am wanting to do some small mods (headers, catback, slp runners) to my 305 TPI with 119k on it. Here are my problems:

I have a couple of small leaks (oil and tranny fluid) dripping on the garage floor. I'm not 100% sure where the oil leak is coming from. I also have a quick knocking when I start the car (only lasts for about 4-5 knocks ... or about 1 second) and I don't know what that is. I have a little white smoke coming from the tailpipe until the engine warms. Somehow, I think I am getting gas into my oil ... and possibly oil into the coolant.

Before I do these small mods, I want my engine in tip-top shape. Are these things I could probably fix (possibly replace head gasket, valve seals, etc.), or should I do a complete top-end rebuild?

I don't see the point in modding a "lame horse." With 119k on the clock, what do you recommend? Thanks, guys!

Re: Where to start?

well if were you i'd pull the top end off and c what the ridge looks like inside the cylinders, if your talking about a lot of wear yae it rebuilt, if not you wanted to regasket it anyways so no real loss.

this whole procedure realy depends on your knocking noise though and where its coming from. (bearings?)

Re: Where to start?

yeah spend the time to make sure its worth while.
i did my whole top end on my 305 and I have over 100,000 miles.
Little smoke at start up, 1 thing it could be is your valve seals.
Clean up that bad boy and see what you find.
You can see the list of mods I have for my 305 in my sig.
