Injector Q's
Injector Q's
In the latest GMHTP(May 2001), Ray Bohacz answers a tech question by basically saying it makes more sense to buy a new set of injectors, rather than having an old set rebuilt and matched. I'd tend to agree with him from a purely economical perspective, but it actually brought more questions to my mind.
1. How are injectors rated for usable lifespan(millions of cycles perhaps)? How can one get an approximate measurement of useful life left(an accurate measurement of expended cycles would be impossible)? What are the rated lifespans(cycles) of popular aftermarket(SVO, Accel, etc.,...) and OEM injectors.
2. Are any of the aftermarket injectors sold as matched sets(flow-matched to a certain tolerance)? How accurate are the advertised flow-rates in comparison to their "as delivered" state and, what is an alllowable variation for a performance application.
My injectors are starting to show signs of clogging and/or wear. Before I rush off to replace them, I wouldn't mind some more info to help pick replacements.

With respect to your second question, I recently bought a set of Accel's new 21 lb/hr injectors from Rich at Cruzin (www.cruzinperformance.com). Rich was one of the "beta" testers for these injectors and was impressed with the pre-production units in terms of flow rate accuracy and precision. The Accel packaging claimed they were flow matched to within 1.5% FWIW(going from memory since I just trashed the box but think that's right). Rich trys to match flow rates within 1-2% when people send him used sets to clean and flow. The old set I sent him varied up to 5% and a couple injectors still leaked afer cleaning. We both agreed that getting the new set made more sense.
Mark,
Thank you for the reply. I've priced having my present injectors cleaned and blue-printed and come to the conclusion that for a few dollars more I can get a new set. Accels seem to be be priced right and I think they're the brand I'll go with.
