where is MAP sensor, and can this make my car run bad?

I have no idea where is it. I got a chilton book and it sucks, it wasn't even woth buying it hasn't helped me out once. I was just wondering where it is, and how it can affect your car, I don't have a check engine light, my car gets bad gas milleage, it feels like a 6 cylinder, and just sounds bad, it also idles screwy sometimes one week it weill idle up high, and the next week it will idle way low and die on me.
Any help would be appreciated.
thanks guys

Well, If you have a TPI as I suspect, it should be on the passenger side of the TPI plenum, back by the distributor cover. Yes a bad MAP can make the car run bad though I have never had one of mine go bad. More details will help, i.e. what kinda of car, engine, mods, symptoms etc.

I have a 89 350 formula, nothing really done to it, I looked at the map sensor, it is susposed to be covered with gunk? there is black seleant all around it, and crusty and hard.

if you have a 1989 engine then you DONT HAVE a MAP sensor, it only came on 90-92 cars.

Check the basics and make sure that the plug wires are in the correct sequence. If you have done anything with the plugs.
