Backfire and Hesitation
I have a 87 TPI 305 stock except exhaust.
My car has a hard time starting( You have to feather the gas to much kills it to little same thing) When i am featuring it, it backfires out the tb. I checked timing it seemed fine. Correctly adjusted the TPI. Does anyone know what else i can check?

Re: Backfire and Hesitation
might have to replace the mass air flow sensor MAF
its the air sensor in your air intake infront of your throttle body. unplg it and that will put your car in limp mode. if its faulty it should start right up. if you have the similar problems then the MAF isn't fully or not at all your problem. this all comes down to trouble shooting and narrow down where the problem is.
also check for air leaks and check your full pressure it should be around 48psi
just sounds like its ready for a darn good tune up and certain important sensors/engine parts to be cleaned and replaced. injectors and spark plugs would be a nice start but find your real problem first.

also wouldnt be a bad thoguht of replacing your idle air control valve which is under your throttle body. and clean the port is screws into. mine was disgusting with black gunk. but with my car one lil thing didn't fix it. it was a combination of replacing and cleaning many things. just something to consider tsince your probably goign to have to do it anyway little by little. I did it all in a few shots and got the tune up over with. I'm very pleased with the engines results.

If you've got a stock harmonic balancer, the ring on it could have slipped so that your timing marks will be off. It took me a long time to figure this one out.
Bring #1 cyl to TDC and check that the timing mark is at 0*.
