Porting TPI Plenum
Well the time has finally come. I have been planning this project for a couple of years now. I am commencing the porting of the plenum, runners and intake manifold to my TPI engine. FMR 19lbs/hr injectors, a Holley adjustable fuel pressure regulator and Holley air foil will be installed at this time. I am using Fel Pro gaskets. All the parts will be gasket matched. I am waiting for the parts to arrive from Summit Racing. I have read three articles on the porting work and another article on installing fuel injectors. My mechanic will be doing the work and has a machine shop to do all the porting work. My mechanic had a few questions which I thought I would ask people here today.
1. Can these Ford Motor Racing injector take boosting the fuel pressure up to 50 psi? Stock for a 5.0 liter is about 36 psi. I have read that you should not exceed 50 psi as it can affect your computer.
2. Do the clips from the wiring harness fit the Ford fuel injectors?
3. I have indentified the GM O rings to use on the injectors. Some have said these are better than the O rings that come with the Ford injectors. Any comments on the need to use the GM O-rings over the ones that come with the Ford injectors?
4. Any other last comments I should pass on to my mechanic and the machine shop before I begin.
I am the original owner of a 1989 GTA with a 5.0 liter TPI engine with a 5 speed manual transmission. About 36,000 Km ago I got a new 5.0 liter engine from GM and swapped over the TPI set up. The car has about 223,000 Km on it. When we installed the engine we installed a Comp Cam Xtreme Energy cam, Hedman Headers shorty headers, removed the catalytic converters and installed a 2.5” exhaust pipe with a Walker super turbo exhaust. I have installed a K&N air filter, modified the original air box to permit more air flow and removed the screens from the MAF sensor. A BBK 255 lph fuel pump has been installed. I use a 160 degree high flow Mr. Gasket thermostat with an Edelbrock water pump.
Thanks for your comments.

Re: Porting TPI Plenum
ok here we go....
1.) yes they can, i purchased 30lb ford SVO's for my HSR 383. u can bump the pressure but what it does is increase the spraying of the injector by assimilating a larger injector. boosting to 50psi isnt all that bad for the injector but u should boost psi too much like 60. can cause the injector to overheat and burn out...killing the injector. bumping the stock 19lb 5.0 injectors resulted in a noticable power increase... realize that your computer will learn that more fuel has been flowing due to the 02 sensor and will lower the injector pulse widths accordingly, this is done by the computer. your upgrades that u have already require a custom chip burnt to get maxium drivablity and power.
2.) if u purchased the correct ford injectors they are a direct swap... ithink they are called EV1...EV6 is the newer LS1 etc.... i believe the clips will work.
3.) i heard that too... supposidly the GM o-rings are thicker than the fords... i have the fords on the injector but when i bought a gasket rebuild kit for my TPI it came with new injector 0-rings and they kinda look the same... ppl say to use the GM's but i would look at them and u make the call... theyre cheap anyways.
4.) make sure he knows how and where to port the intake to get the flow.... behind the TB 2 walls have to be removed, and around the runner holes etc.... idk what runners u purchased bc u cant enlarge the stock runners at all. make sure he portmatches them correctly... SLP's are harder to port at the plenum bc more material has to be removed but they offer more power. also when i ported mine i used rear gear oil (off the shelf stuff) and dipped the carbide bit every couple of minutes to help with the heat and cutting. the stock base is gona be hard to port but an aftermarket would be alot better and then ported stocker. u didnt say anything about heads.... your stockers are crap... i would upgrade to world products SR torqers 305 heads, u could get a 30-40hp increase. they are cheap from what i hear and perform good on the 305 since they are designed for the smaller bore 305. Chevy high performance did this to a 3rd gen camaro with a cam/exhaust upgrade etc and made over 60rwhp

Re: Porting TPI Plenum
Well I thought I would update everyone on how the project went. It has made a noticeable difference to horsepower and torque. My mechanic permitted me to sit off to the side of his shop and polish and paint all the parts I wanted. We had one glitch. The Holley Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator leaked out of the top so we got a new one from a local auto parts store and sent the defective one back.
Yes I could have got those World Product Heads. I even looked at them. Then I could have gotten a new manifold and runners. It was just a matter of how much I wanted to invest in this 5.0 liter engine.
We used the O-rings that came with the ford injectors and they seem to work fine. The fel pro gaskete set also had a set of O-rings.
For others interest the parts cost about $450 and the labour to take everything off, port the plenum, runners and intake manifold, and reassemble everything and tune the car was about $600. This includes federal and provincial taxes.
