What happens if a TPS goes bad?

I am trouble shooting my car. Trying to figure out this damn idle and driving prob. I just want to know what the symptoms of a bad TPS are? Thanks

Car: 1986 Pontiac Trans Am
Engine: 5.0 TPI
Transmission: 700R4
Once, my TPS was shot...so i had to get a new one, which cost somewhere around 20-30 bucks...i dont remember. Some symptoms that i noticed were things like an obvious fluctuating idle, when hitting the gas, the car does not move like it should, or even hesitates to move and THEN after flooring it for a bit, starts to pick up the speed. That is what happend to me. Even if its in park, and you hit the gas, the car wont rev like it should. At first i thought it was the MAF, but it wasnt. The only thing is with the TPS, is that you should have a diagnostics tool that monitors engine speed, air intake, and fuel mixture raitos to properly "set" the TPS...because it does need fine tuning to work properly. Cant really just slap it on...well, you can, but if you want the car to run the way its supposed to, it needs a bit more precision.

Thanks for the info.....I don't think my prob is the TPS then. The car is driveing beautiful and everything is normal except the idle won't com down at stops or in park or neutral. It is intermittent so I still think it is a sensor.

My V6 threw a code, then ignored it and ran fine.
