For those of you with the Fuel filler neck problem
I looked down the barrel of my gas filler neck and saw a rubber cover with 2 hose clamps on it, Is that where the recall was, on the rubber area ? I just wonder because i have the terrible gas smell from the rear, and wonder if it needs to be replaced. I already called Chevy and they said there were no recalls for my Vin # Any help ?????

Usually when you get that gas smell it is because the filter in the purge canister needs to be replaced. It is the plastic cylinder that sits over your left front fender. If you unbolt it there is a filter in the bottom of it. Mine was clogged with dust and spider webs and when I replaced the filter the gas smell went away. That is what recirculates the vapors from your gas tank.
I'm sure there can be other things that can cause it but I think this is overlooked most of the time (Cheap & easy alternative also).

I forgot to mention that i replaced the carbon canister about a year ago, but still no luck with the smell, any other ideas ?
i just diagnosed a gas smell problem on my 89 GTA. pressure was building up in the tank, and was venting out of the gas cap causing a strong gas smell from the back of the car, plus spilled gasoline if the tank was more than 2/3 full.
The problem turned out to be a clogged line going from the gas tank to the vapor canister. a quick shot of compressed air from the tank end cleared out the obstruction.
