What does an EST code mean?

I have an EST code a rich and lean code on my computer. I was wondering if this EST code meant that their was something wrong with the timing module in the distributor.

Electronic Spark Timing. Make sure that the tan wire above the heater box is not disconnected. If the timing has been set recently (in the proper procedure) it will show a soft code on the scanner which can be reset by disconnecting the battery for a minute.

I was wondering if this might mean the timing module was bad.

It could be, get it on a Snap On Scan Tool to make sure. Look in the Trouble Shoot Section. I doubt that it is the module because if they do go bad the car will not even start.

There are a few other simple checks when an EST code is set. With the distributor cap off, make sure you see a machine screw securely providing a good ground for the black wire. Also, check to see that the connectors on either side of the module have not cracked from age and thus causing a short.

When I worked auto parts, I tested about 10 of these a week. The GM modules needed to be cycled about 10 times on the tester before they would heat up to normal operating temperature. Many of the times, they would be fine when cold but the dwell circuit would show bad once heated. Hope it helps. -Matt-

I am having an idle and driving prob and it is intermittent. Last time I ran into this prob it was the module and the IAC combined. I think the module went and burnt the IAC out. The prob is that there is nowhere to get it tested where I live. I would have to take the chance and buy it and at $80 a pop I would hate it to not be the prob. I will see what i can do .....Thanks a bunch.
