I need help with my first TPI setup! Moderators?

Here is the deal. I just got the 383 in, see the sig for the specifics. I went to set the timing and now my engine is doing some crazy stuff. I disconnected the EST and set the timing to 6 degrees BTDC. When I reconnected the EST it would rev fine but the idle was irratic. It would fluctuate in-between 600 and 1200 rpm's. I thought that the IAC might need to be cleaned and adjusted. So I pulled it, cleaned it, and reinstalled it. I set the pintle length to 1-1/8 like the paines manual said. I then jumped the A&B terminals and disconnected the IAC connector. When I tried to start it I had to floor it and then keep reving it in order to keep it running, if i let off the gas it would just die. I shut down the engine and reconnected the connecter to the IAC. Now it will run and idle, although still erradicaly, but it still isn't smooth. What did I do wrong or have yet to do to get this engine running smooth? I researched throught the archives to get the information to get as far as I have. I am at a dead end now. I need help. Also How do I adjust the minimum idle setting and then readjust the TPS to correspond.

You're heading the the right direction Rob.

Look at where the throttle stop hits, you'll see a the end of the screw you need to adjust, on the oppposite of where the screw comes out, you'll see a little casted plug, you need to break it off (casted plug) to access the throttle stop screw.

Beings that I've not had to adjust my min idle, i'm not sure what size you need, but most likely it's a small torx bit.

TPS should be adjusted after the min idle, loosen the torx head screws, and set for .54 volts, procedure for which wires to tap into are in tech Central, in fact i think min. idle setting is too.

Is this a used TPI setup? If so, before going through all the setup, make sure the TB is cleaned, take it apart and clean all the passages, etc...a gasket kit is pretty cheap, and ensures you're not fighting sludge.

I searched around some more and found the tech articles you mentioned. I will give them a try this weekend. The TPI is off of my old 305. I cleaned and rebuilt the old throttle body before putting it on the new engine. Thanks for the help.

Now that I think about it, should my timing be set to 6-8 degrees before I start all of this? With my having such a large cam, in comparrison to the last, would that affect the idle with the IAC disconnected? I would think that the vacuum from the intake would pull open the throttle plates to what the engine needed. Am I wrong in this thinking? I am going to try and get this **** set tonight.
Thanks
Robert

Rob,

The engine should not open the throttle blades at idle, if it's doing that, then the spring is shot. The blades should only open when you press the accelerator pedal.

You may need more timing due to the cam you used, contact the cam manufacturer, and ask where you should start at with your engine. Your cam doesn't seem too large, especially for a 383, so 6-8 to start should be okay.
