MAF to SD questions

I spent several hours last night searching on here and could not find the answers.

I have a 85 Camaro TPI set up going on to a pre 87 GM 350/375 hp Crate motor. I'm going to convert it over to SD.

Questions are as follows

1. Do I need to change the cam in the motor to a "efi" cam ? I was told I should.

2. Where in a NON TPI block do I put the knock sensor ?

3. The TPI set up I bought has no sensors or anything on it. Because I am converting to SD and using the 90/91 computer, do I still order the sensors (EGR, O2, TPS etc) and injectors from the 85 set up or do I order them for the 90/91 (since I need to order them all anyways) ?

4. I am using a Turbo 350 tranny on the setup, is there anything I should know about this ? Does the computer have to interact with the tranny or is that wiring simply to make the 700 work with the motor and shift properly ?

Re: MAF to SD questions

1. Your cam needs to be "computer friendly" when running an SD setup. I'm not sure what setup you should use, someone else will chime in on that, hopefully. I think I'd start with an L98 or LT1 cam and some retro-fit roller lifters if I were you. After that, you'll be ECM tuning to get it right.

2. I think most 80-85 blocks have the provisions for the knock sensor. I don't know which one you will have. I can't be sure for the chevy, but my other GM stuff that is newer than 80 has the knock sensor provision in it.

3. If you are using a 91 Computer, then buy sensors for the 91 L98 car. The injectors need to be for a 350, I don't think it matters what year L98 you get.

4. If you run a Turbo 350 with a lock up converter (80 or newer) You can use your 91 torque converter lock up wire for it. If you use a non-lockup tranny it doesn't matter or affect the computer.

I hope this helps a little...

That is awesome

The block is a GM crate motor, came complete with 4bbl intake at the time. If it did have a knock sensor provision, where would I look to confirm ?

Re: MAF to SD questions

On my other GM stuff it is on the side of the block, near the freeze plugs. It's a threaded hole that is in the side of the block. You'll know it's right because your knock sensor will thread in.

By the way, you need the knock sensor and the ESC module for the L98 350 as well. Apparently the 305 pieces are different.
