Bad fan relay or what?

ok my dead bone stock iroc begins to overheat while im sitting in traffic for lets say 5-10 minutes, but once i start driving down the road again it cools back down.i havent really looked into this problem that much but i can tell you that when i get to my driveway and open the hood(car is in the 240* range) that neither of the fans are running.i dont know if it is my stat sticking or what. on my black car i had it rigged so that the fan was on all the time when the engine was running.

I just spent all day Sunday fighting that fan in my 86 IROC! The switch in the block is easy to check/bypass. Start the car, ground out the wire coming off the relay and see if the fan comes on. You should also be able to start the fan by turning on the AC, once the system pressure gets up to about 230 psi in the AC system. On mine I have 4 wires going into/out of the relay (located between the battery and radiator). The orange wire is power from the fusible link to the relay, the tan wire is power from the fuse box to operate the relay, the black/red wire is power from the relay to the fan and the green/black wire runs (basically a ground) to the temperature switch in the block. You can pull the connector off the relay and jump across the orange or tan wire to the black/red wire to see if the fan runs. I had power every where I should have had (when checked with a meter) but the fan would not run when I jumped across the orange (power wire) to the black/red wire. Turns out the wire from the fusible link (coming off the pos. bat. cable) was basically in two right at the connector. I had a good enough connection to read 12 volts (on the meter) but not a good enough connection to push enough current to run the fan motor (drove me nuts till I figure it out by trying to jump across those wires). If it is the relay Advance Auto sells them for $9.95, I just bought one for nothing.
