People with AFR 190s, question within...
Im thinking of calling AFR this weekend and ordering some of the 190 heads. I just wanted to know what questions AFR asked you guys before you ordered? or were there any? If you could give me some suggestions that would be great. Thanks to all that reply.

Actually they'll be the ones asking YOU questions, so be prepared to tell them what you want. When I got mine in 1997 they asked me:
- what size combustion chamber
- perimeter or center bolt valve covers?
- do I need the head drilled for the water temp sener
- if I need one with the heat riser passages
- angle or straight plug
I think that's all they asked. Keep in mind it's extra for the center bolt style heads and to drill for the water temp sender. The first question is important because they can mill the heads to your specs (also extra $$), so you kinda need to know what direction you are going with your engine...is it gonna be NA or blown? Since I was going NA I had them mill mine from
the stock 68cc to 58cc to raise compression. HTHs

I'm getting ready to order my AFR 190 heads also. Going to get the 74cc heads milled to 70cc (AFR recommends the 74cc head as having a slightly more efficient combustion chamber than the 68cc heads -- anyone care to refute this?) along with temperature sender holes and possibly the .600" lift valve upgrade, along with a hydra-rev kit.

A big question that can save you alot of time and headache is what headers you will be using? This will determine if you get straight, angle or L98 angle plug heads.

I am most likely gonna use CompCams XR269HR @.50 in/218 ex/224 ls@ 112, lift of in/.495 ex/.503 or maybe something similar but an ls of 114 for more street friendly driving. Ill be bolting on the Edelbrock base and runners on this engine and also doing some upgrades on the ignition. I am going to do all the upgrades at once since I will be asking the shop to go ahead and rebuild the engine for me (150,000miles). I figured since they have the engine out, might as well get some aftermarkets on there.
Here are the answers I came up with, with the questions they asked you.

I ordered mine a couple weeks ago. Got them sent off today. The temp sensor hole does need to be there. Why do you have to have the heat riser. I did without them. You must be keeping emissions. I also got the hydra rev kit(heard good things about it). I went with angle plug heads which I was told I had to have for my Hooker long tube headers. Anyone else??

I ordered mine with the heat risers. Because even though we dont have emissions testing of any kind here in Indiana if I ever wanted to sell them they would sell easier. ive got a mini ram and it doesnt even have provisions for an EGR so I just use a fel pro #1204 gasket which has a metal piece that blocks the riser anyway.
I have straight plugs and hooker long tubes. All the plugs are easy to get to EXCEPT for #7. That one is a bitch!
we had to dent in that primary tube to get the plug in there and a plug wire on it. I wish I had gotten the angle plug version.

Get the upgraded spring and retainer package. I think the stock 1.450 springs they use are not that good. I think that is one of my problems now. I've also heard of people having sping problems with their stock 1.450 springs and high-lift cams after a while. Ask AFR about it.

I know that the standard angle plug head and hooker super comps work awesome....lot's of room. However the same head with the 1 3/4" SLP's I had where impossible. I'm not sure how the TES compare. TES are pretty small, you might want to upgrade those headers since you will be using a superior head now

It basically replaces part of the stock roller setup and helps reduce valve float at high RPM's

They are made for the Edelbrock Victor Jr intake, but a few people I know have them on their TPI no problem. AFR confirmed. He recommended these as although they are the same as 190's stock have more porting room
